S3IT - Linux Command Line

The Linux Command Line course is a program offered by S3IT with the goal of introducing you to controlling a computer exclusively through text based inputs.
The command line itself is what is used within the ScienceCloud to control virtual machines and is also used within the ScienceCluster to manage your data and submit your jobs.
This course can be seen as a mini-class on the very basics of the GNU / Linux operating system and of the Bash programming language (the name "Bash" stands for "Bourne Again SHell"), that is the most common program to interpret the commands issued on a GNU / Linux command line.
It takes approximately 2.5 hours.

Learning objectives
In this course you will learn what is a command line and a shell, the basics of manipulating files and data on a computer, how to connect to and control remote computers or virtual machines, how to manage custom software (often used in research), and much more.

Needed equipment
Learning activities
  • GNU / Linux and its command line
  • Filesystem, its structure and permissions
  • Manipulate files
  • Manage software (Debian / Ubuntu systems)
  • Check system resources
  • Connect to a remote host (key based authentication)
  • Transfer files from and to a remote host

The participants do not need any previous knowledge of the GNU/Linux command line.

If you are a user of the ScienceCloud or the ScienceCluster, or if you are a researcher who needs to optimize the use of your (Unix based) personal computer, you will likely benefit from this clinic.

Materials which will be used during the course:

· Lesson slides
· Handout notes (contains also some topic not covered by the lesson)
