Introduction to Git and Gitlab

Git is the state-of-the-art version control system, taking away the pain of continuously changing file versions. Keep track of who changed what, when and why, and revert changes easily.

GitLab allows you to save the files in the cloud, giving you a secure backup location and enabling easy collaboration. Never lose your files again, publish with confidence, and coordinate changes of different contributors with ease.

Lets put these two amazing tools together; to work more efficient and make less mistakes. We will help you to get started.

Learning content
This course gives you a solid understanding of git, including its basic concepts. We will have exercise breaks where you can apply the concepts at your own pace.

Introduction: Learn the terminology & architecture of git.
Local workflow: Use the console for the first steps.
Remote workflow: Use GitLab to backup & collaborate.
Gittyup: Use Gittyup to visualize.
Advanced topics: Fun part for aspiring power users.

Before the course:

Login to gitlab.uzh.ch or gitlab.ethz.ch (you need a SWITCH eduID account).
Install git from git-scm.com. The defaults of the installer are sensible.
Install Gittyup from github.com/Murmele/Gittyup.

We will help you in the course if some installation causes problems.

Voraussetzungen

No experience required. All tools we use are free.

Teilnehmende

Students and employees of the University of Zurich. Particularly suitable for students at the BSc/MSc-level with no prior experience with Git. Students who have used git before, but only superficially (copying & pasting commands found online...), will profit from a structured understanding of git.

Kursunterlagen

All material is published on https://gitlab.uzh.ch/zi-it-training/git/ (in a git repository, of course!).

Bemerkungen

You need to be able to use your computer. This course is offered in cooperation with The Alternative (https://thealternative.ch).
